Apache: Air Assault is a flight simulation game, where the player flies the AH-64D Apache helicopter in various combat mission scenarios. The gameplay in Apache: Air Assault is very similar to that of its predecessor, Iron Warriors: TANKS (aka "NAM 1975" outside North America). Each level consists of two parts; an initial ground combat part and then an air combat part. The player must first complete the ground objectives before proceeding to the second phase. Once accomplished, while still on ground control but with a fully armed helicopter, they can fly around while waiting for airborne targets (red dots on radar) or start picking up troops highlighted by yellow dots. When the enemy is spotted, the helicopter will track it down, with either a lock-on missile or guns firing in concert with the targeting system. The player must then fly over or around the target and destroy it before being shot down or leaving combat. There are currently six missions available on each disk (apart from one on which you play on an Apache attack helicopter.) Each disk also includes two bonus missions; Special Ops. These missions are entirely different from all other missions in that they aren't assigned to any particular unit; you won't be flying around against spec ops forces like in some other Apache games (for example, Iron Warriors: TANKS). Instead, these missions take place against a common threat to all countries, and you will play as either a US or Russian helicopter. The US missions take place in the Soviet Union and the Russia missions take place in North America. The original "Apache: Air Assault" was released to generally positive reviews. The game was praised for its graphics and environments; it received an 8 out of 10 rating from GameSpot. The reviews were also positive to the gameplay itself; GameSpot gave the game an 8 out of 10 rating as well, noting a good "feel" to the Helicopter controls and a challenging but fair battle area which avoided being too big or too small for player interaction. The game mechanics were also praised for their sound design, with the gunship's weapons packs, smoke grenades and attack style being lauded as particularly impressive. The missions themselves were found to be "well-balanced", with the reviewer noting that the missions were varied enough not to become boring. The plot was generally criticized as uninspired, with "an unappealing plot about an American invasion of the Soviet Union" receiving a 2 out of 5. However, this was contrasted by praise for how different each mission is; one mission has you escorting a convoy while another has you rescuing hostages. Though the game was not released on the Xbox, it was developed by Eurocom for the PC. Guru3D.com rated "Apache: Air Assault" with 4 out of 5 stating that "The story of Apache is quite interesting and will have you hooked to it. If you are a flight simulation fan then this game is good for you. The last part where you must destroy targets is real tough." The music in "Apache: Air Assault" was composed by Darryl Cotton of Virtuoso Band at their studio near London, England. http://www-oversee-bms.pennwellsolutions.co. cfa1e77820
